•ONE WORD: A watchable comedy-drama for family and feel-good movie lovers.

The film Mohan Kuman Fans is directed by Jis Joy who himself handles the story and screenplay. The story is written by Bobby and Sanjay and the movie is produced by Listen Stephen which comes under the banner of Magic Frames production. The movie comprises actors like Kunchacko Boban, Siddique, Mukesh, newcomer Anarkali Nazar, Vinay Forrt, KPC Lalitha, Ramesh Pisharody, Saiju Kurup, S.V Krishna Shankar, Sreenivasan, Joy Thomas and T.G Ravi. The cinematography for the film is handled by Bahul Ramesh and editing is made by Ratheesh Raj.

The movie revolves around Mohan Kumar an ex-actor who makes a comeback almost after thirty years with a strong performance.  The comeback invites him with many critical acclaims and appreciation from movie lovers and from the public. Soon Krishnan Unni arrives at his life as a driver, a person who loves to become a professional singer in movies. Both of them gradually share a great bond and Mohan Kumar’s daughter Sreeranjini is also a person who loves to become a professional singer. Both Krishnan Unni and Sreeranjini decides to participate in a singing reality show and soon Krishnan Unni becomes a part of Mohan Kumar’s happy family. Due to the terrific comeback and the strong performance Mohan Kumar’s name gets nominated in Kerala State Film Awards for the best actor, will he be awarded and what’s the role of Krishnan Unni in Mohan Kumar’s life is the rest of the story.

When the screen shows the director name Jis Joy one this is sure the movie will defiantly have feel good and heart-melting segments. Just like his previous films Mohan Kumar Fans also follows his same making pattern with components such as inspiration, motivation, sentiments, feel-good factors and a happy ending. The making held by Jis Joy is one of the main highlight, pure and clean way of direction was all overseen throughout the film till the end. The whole making was passionate and a committed way of filmmaking was seen throughout, but unfortunately, he hasn’t scored well when he turned out himself as the screenplay writer. The making held by Jis Joy was steady and moved in the right constant path, nothing gets diverted or no kind of diversion was seen, the entire direction was as per the story but the issues that carry out in the screenplay makes the momentum dull, he could have written much brighter and sharper.

The story was written by Bobby and Sanjay and the plot was amazing for making a complete engaging family movie. The various events, situations and circumstances that lead the plot was written convincingly without any form of confusions. Even though the plot is predictable the moments that runs in the plot is truly delightful to watch. As a director, Jis Joy had done a wonderful job but his impressive scoring level was not seen in the screenplay. The kind of methods he used in the screenplay is good but not great, the situations in the plot especially in the second half are very hard to digest. A scene showing an important press conference and the arrangements made to it and an important character believing it without any doubts was very shoddy and inadequate to watch. The screenplay gets flat when the story reaches the core area, towards the end the kind of situations they shown was not convincing to watch, till they’re a pleasant way of joyful moments was beautifully filled and by this particular scenes the delightful viewing experience gets distracted and making the viewers think how is this even possible or can someone believe this. Personally, at some point, I felt the movie was overfilled with motivation and inspiration dialogues, when a scene is going to be over it mostly ends with motivational and inspirational dialogues so, at some point, it was not great to watch.

What I like most in the direction of Jis Joy is he had effectively used the real acting skills of every actor especially the actor Siddique. Every actor who comes in the movie had delivered their best, the guidance of a devoted director was supremely seen, his guidance to the actors on how they should perform, or what he thinks and expecting from these actors was brought out brilliantly to the screen by his instructions and commitment. While watching the title card I happened to see a lyricist, none another the director Jis Joy, actually felt happy to see it. The movie has a couple of tracks and the songs were having powerful lyrics with actual depth so as a lyricist also Jis Joy showed his skill. So like I said earlier he done a marvellous job on the whole making, unfortunately, if the screenplay could have been focused more or if he had teamed up with anyone the movie would have ended up as a complete entertainer. Still, for family audiences and also for feel-good movie lovers, Jis Joy had done a pretty good job, for them, these errors won’t be affected, am sure an enjoyable watching experience is guaranteed for their time.

Looking into the performance of actors Siddique plays the role of Mohan Kumar which is the central character of the film. Kunchacko Boban, Mukesh, newcomer Anarkali Nazar, Vinay Forrt, KPC Lalitha, Ramesh Pisharody, Saiju Kurup, S.V Krishna Shankar, Sreenivasan, Joy Thomas and T.G Ravi joins in the casting. Let’s begin with the speechless and brilliant performance of Siddique, he once again delivered his best, the acting skills, various kinds of expressions according to the scenes, timing in delivering the dialogues and portraying of intensity had lived with his entire performance. I was shocked as well as happy to his applause deserving performance, was just living as the character. The emotional scenes, tears rolling from his eyes, the difficult situations which the character pass etc was beautifully acted out by Siddique. With full confidence, I can say that Siddique is the kind of actor who can deliver whatever a filmmaker demands. It was simply his inside out show with zero errors and no-fault, he is truly underrated and deserves more appreciation just like other top heroes. Kunchako Boban as Krishnan Unni also did a shining performance, I was really happy to see his dance moves once again, the combination scene with Siddique also worked out well, the innocence of his character was also portrayed well. Vinay Forrt as the Young Superstar, Aghosh Menon did a great job, his humour was entertaining and delivers a favourable performance. Mukesh as Prakash Mathew also did a terrific job, the supporting character was safer on his hands, his combination scenes with Siddique was flawless and the serious manner for a movie producer was matching like as perfect. The newcomer Anarkali Nazar as Sreeranjini did a great job, as a debutant actress she surprises till the end with the impressive performance. Her emotional scenes were also good the combination with Kunchacko Boban was awesome. The supporting actors like Ramesh Pisharody, Krishna Shankar, Joy Mathew, Major Ravi, T.G Ravi, Sreenivasan, K.P.A.C Lalitha, Sethu Lakshmi, Saiju Kurup, Alencier Lay Lopez and Saiju Kurup did complete justice to their respective roles.

The music for the film is composed by Prince George and the background score is tuned by William Francis. The songs composed by Prince George was average but the track ‘Neelamizhi’ was melodious among other normal ones, there are a couple of songs for the scenes those tracks were ok, but without visuals, I couldn’t engage with it. The background score by William Francis was excellent, for every scene he had tuned with the right background scores to set the scenes, therefore these background tunes had set to make the right impact. The BGM gives the real freshness and feels for every feels good scenes also for the emotional scenes he had given the perfect ones. The cinematography of Rahul Ramesh was fine with matching and flawless visuals for a family drama film and the editing of Ratheesh Raj was crisp and clear with fine cuts, mismatches was not felt. The choreography for the song ‘Mallike’ was utterly disappointing, changing of costumes in between and set arrangement was poor to watch but the dance choreography and its moves gave for Kunchako Boban was incredible throughout.

So to conclude the movie Mohan Kumar fans had given me an average experience in all manner, it’s a kind of film that offers its moments to cherish, also motivating and inspiring just like other Jis Joy films. If you are a person who likes to watch a feel-good movie then you can make an approach and for a one time watch with your family, Mohan Kumar Fans can be a good choice, still, watch with fewer expectations.
