Udayakrishna – Sibi K Thomas sow and reaped from formulaic comedy films in recent past. Malayalees have been bombarded with all the comedy in this world and suddenly they started not to get affected by small doses of comedy. That’s when audience took a different turn and moved into soft light hearted entertainers.
Stardom
When Prithviraj took the spot of Suresh Gopi, it was so smooth that even audience didn’t knew it was happening. But a cold war is being undergone for ‘the boy next door’ image between Dileep and Jayasurya for some time now.
Director
Anwar Rasheed, Vyshak, and Shafi make commercial comedy entertainers. Like them Saji Surendran knows the ingredients of mass and he is flashing it in film Kunjaliyan. Saji took the film in large scale and this may be the biggest film for Jayasurya till date.
I will place Kunjaliyan just in between Pokkiri Raja for its mass appeal and Venicile Vyapary for its lagging.
Acting
Jayasurya has done nothing to become the character. His acting and looks were rather stale. Ananya wasn’t looking at her best. Manikkuttan is an actor who has got stuff. He seems to be on the process of loosing his stiffness, am sure he will be considered a better actor in future. But in this film, his portrayal is banal.
Suraj would need to reinvent or people will get bored to death. Comedy by Thesni khan is fine.
Songs were peppy but are not memorable.
Positives
Beautiful locations
Delicious cinematography from Anil Nair
Negatives
The characters are all stale.
This kind of films shouldn’t try to tell something serious.
Krishna Poojappura needed to sharpen his axe. If the length was cut, climax re written and characters reshaped it would have been a big hit.
Box Office
Think Karyasthan. Most reviews gave a negative opinion, though I believe Kunjalian has a chance as ‘ingredients’ are positioned well. Only coming days will prove what is going to happen to this flick.
Verdict – Go for it if you like mass entertainers and have capability to sit through some lagging minutes.
