Mammootty and Dileep in lead roles, playing two Konkani brothers who run a chain of hotels, Udayakrishna and Sibi K Thomas in charge of the script, ‘Karyasthan’ fame Thomson in charge of direction- what would you be expecting out of a film that has these factors as its highlights?

I think I knew what to expect and now that I have seen the film, I am not totally dissatisfied. If you ask me what is there in the movie to speak of, I won’t have much to say. But on the other hand, I’d have to say that the film has almost all those ingredients that I expected to see in it…So, on the whole I am happy with it.

‘Kamath & Kamath’ tells the story of two brothers belonging to the Konkani community- Rajaraja Kamath (Mammootty) and Devaraja Kamath (Dileep). After their father got crippled in an accident, the two brothers, in their childhood itself, started a wayside eatery and finally they ended up being the proprietors of a chain of hotels, aptly named ‘Kamath & Kamath’.

The Kamath brothers take up a hotel that was closed down following a raid by government authorities and seizure of stale food. That in fact was a conspiracy hatched by Sulaiman Sait (Riza Bawa), who runs a hotel just opposite it. The conspiracy was executed by Sebastian Kuzhuveli (Suraaj Venjaramoodu), a municipal councilor who got bribes in return for the favour. When the Kamath brothers take up the hotel, both Sulaiman Sait and Sebastian start plotting against them too, so that they don’t run the hotel and Sulaiman Sait could finally buy the property and use it himself. Sebastian even feeds wrong information about the Kamath brothers to the municipal secretary Mahalakshmi (Rima Kallingal) and persuades her not to issue them a license to run the hotel. But the Kamath brothers, who are very influential, get things done and inaugurate the hotel. The tussle between Sulaiman Sait and the Kamath brothers goes on on one hand and at the same time, Mahalakshmi too nurses a grudge in her mind against them. Soon the air is cleared of hostilities and misunderstandings. Mahalakshmi, who now shares a good rapport with the Kamath brothers, especially Rajaraja Kamath, asks him to help her sister Surekha (Karthika Nair) who feels she is being followed by someone. From here the story takes a new turn…

Well, as I said at the beginning, the film is a typical Sibi-Udayan brand of entertainer, with all ingredients intact. There is humour, there are songs, there is comedy, there is action and there is sufficient amount of emotions too. The film is colourful in the main and would appeal to fans of both Mammootty and Dileep. It would also go down well with the family audience and may end up being another popular hit…

Performance

Both Mammootty and Dileep play their respective characters in their usual respective styles. All others, especially Rima, Karthika and Narain (who does a guest role), do justice to their respective roles. Baburaj and Suraaj provide sufficient dose of humour and fit into their characters well. Dhanush’ cameo, wherein he appears as himself, would no doubt do good to the film.

Technical aspects

Cinematography by Anil Nair, editing by Mahesh Narayanan and art-direction by Manu Jagath suits the mood and tempo of the film and they render full support to director Thomson in making the film a full-fledged, colourful entertainer.

Music

Songs set to tune by M.Jayachandran are all OK and colourful and the background score jells with the mood and the theme.

Script

Udayakrishna and Sibi.K.Thomas, who have scripted many colourful entertainers till date, know how to blend ingredients to form a good entertainer. The way they make the lead players do the major chunk of the humour in the film sometimes results in the supporting characters losing weightage. That happens with ‘Kamath and Kamath’ too. With Mammootty and Dileep doing humour too, others like Suraaj Venjaramoodu and Baburaj get lesser space to perform. Overall, the writer duo has done good work.

Direction

Thomson is in full control of the direction part and it seems we can, in the years to come, expect more such entertainers from him.

Verdict- Entertainer. Good for fans and family audience!!
