Ouagadougou: 60 people were killed in an attack by armed men in the African country of Burkina Faso. In Burkina Faso, the village of Karma, near the border with Mali, opened fire on the crowd. It is reported that the attack was carried out by local terrorist groups. The police have started an investigation into the attack in which many people were injured.
Eyewitnesses say that a group of around 100 youths in military uniforms on motorbikes and pick-up trucks entered the village and opened fire on people. Unofficial estimates put the death toll at over 80. Local terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS are said to have come in military garb. The local administration informed that those who were injured in the incident were immediately shifted to the hospital
Conflict broke out in Mali and Burkina Faso in 2012 when extremist groups took over the separatist movement for the Twarag tribe in Mali. Currently 40% of Burkina Faso is in the hands of this terrorist group.
Last week, 34 defense volunteers and six soldiers were killed in a similar attack in Orama village, 40 km from Karma village where the attack took place today. The government has announced that it will launch a military operation against all terrorist groups.
More than 10,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the army and the militants. Due to the death toll and opposition to the military leadership, there were two coups last year alone. It has been announced that Ibrahim Thayoor, who became the president through a coup in September 2022, will hold elections next year.
