Colombo: Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared a state of emergency in Sri Lanka where the political crisis continues and has taken over as acting president. The new action comes in the context of President Gotabaya Rajapakse leaving the country without resigning. Meanwhile, the agitation demanding the resignation of Ranil Wickramasinghe is also gathering pace.
While Gotabaya Rajapakse, who left the country without following the announcement of his resignation on July 13, continues to seek political asylum in the Maldives, huge political developments continue in Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who decided to deal with the protesters by declaring an indefinite state of emergency and a curfew around his residence, also installed himself as the acting president.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who left the country with his wife and two bodyguards in a Sri Lanka Air Force flight, remains in the Maldives. Gotabaya arrived at the Mali airport at 3 a.m. Indian time may have entered any other Asian country if the Maldives did not provide political protection. Gotabaya’s brother and former finance minister Basil Rajapakse has also left Sri Lanka and crossed to the United States.
