Wellington: Six dead in a fire at a hostel in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. Eleven people are also reported missing.
The incident happened just after midnight on Tuesday at the Loafers Lodge Hostel in Newtown, Wellington. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, who visited the scene on Tuesday morning, said six people had died and the death toll could rise.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed 11 people were missing and parts of the hostel were damaged. Although the fire has been brought under control to some extent, the building is yet to be entered as there is a fear of the roof collapsing. Officials said 52 people were evacuated from the building after the fire was reported around 12.25 am.
