Islamabad: PML-N leader Mia Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif has been elected the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. He is the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan. Shahbaz Sharif, the leader of the Nawaz faction of the Pakistan Muslim League, was the Leader of the Opposition in the Pakistan National Assembly.
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has resigned from the National Assembly after announcing he would not sit with thieves. Imran tweeted that the country has more humiliation in electing a person who is facing two corruption cases of Rs 16 billion and Rs 8 billion as Prime Minister.
Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz are facing a major money laundering case. A Pakistani court has set April 27 as the date for the PMLN president to step down as prime minister.
Shahbaz Sharif, 70, is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN).
Meanwhile, all members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Imran Khan, have resigned from the National Assembly ahead of the vote to elect a new prime minister. Fawad Chaudhry, a close associate of Imran Khan, said the PTI was boycotting the election.
Opposition groups called for the beleaguered PM to resign. His opponent was Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a 65-year-old former foreign minister from Imran Khan’s party, the PTI.
Meanwhile, pro-Imran Khan protests erupted in Pakistan. The protests took place in twelve cities, including Islamabad, Peshawar, Karachi, and Lahore. Protesters say the US is behind Imran Khan’s ouster. Hundreds of thousands of people, including women, took to the streets at night.
