Washington: More US states ban video-sharing app TikTok over security concerns. With Wisconsin and North Carolina also taking drastic measures, the total number of states that have banned TikTok has reached 20. Governments explain that Tik Tok, developed by Chinese tech company Byte Dance, poses many cyber security threats.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said it is important to protect the nation’s cyberspace from countries like China that are looking for an opportunity to launch cyberattacks against the United States. “It is our duty to protect state information technology from foreign countries that have actively participated in cyber attacks against the United States,” Cooper said in a statement that the decision to ban TikTok is to ensure the security and privacy of the state and people from cyber threats.
WeChat, a Chinese-made instant messaging platform, has also been banned in several US states. Roy Cooper also said that more Chinese apps will be banned in the coming days if necessary after conducting further checks.
