The funeral rites of Pope Francis began with a solemn Mass at St. Peter’s Square. The world bids farewell with tearful hearts to one of the most beloved Popes in the history of the Catholic Church. As per the Pope’s final wish, his burial will be simple and private at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.
Following the ceremonies at St. Peter’s Square, the mortal remains will be taken back to St. Peter’s Basilica. From there, the body will be transported to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, located about 4 kilometers away, for burial.
St. Peter’s Square witnessed a sea of mourners, as hundreds of thousands gathered to catch a final glimpse of the Pope. Indian President Droupadi Murmu arrived at the Vatican on Friday evening and participated in the prayers and ceremonies held at St. Peter’s Square. Minister Roshy Augustine represented the State Government at the ceremony. After the funeral rites concluded, a mourning procession set out towards St. Mary Major Basilica.
