Dhaka: Most of Bangladesh is in darkness after a fault in the national power grid. Government officials said that they are trying to solve the problem. Bangladesh Power Development Board officials say that the problem is serious in the eastern part of the country.
Power department spokesperson Shamim Hasan says that all power stations have been damaged in the capital Dhaka and other major cities and power connections have been interrupted in most parts of the country.
At the same time, government engineers are trying to determine where the fault occurred, the power department said. It will take hours to restore power.
Power shortages have been a regular occurrence in Bangladesh in recent times. Economists say this is because the government has suspended operations of all diesel-powered power plants to reduce import costs.
Diesel-fired power plants generate about 6% of Bangladesh’s electricity generation. Hence due to their closure, there has been a shortfall of 1500 MW in the national electricity allocation.
