Naypyitaw: The military regime continues to carry out the death penalty in Myanmar. Two close supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi and two others declared terrorists by the military were executed. The UN human rights group and other organizations are protesting globally against the military regime’s resumption of executions that had been suspended for decades. The conviction and execution were alleged earlier this year. Human rights organizations are also making a serious allegation that 114 people have been detained and killed by the army so far.
Two of those executed by the military regime were prominent democrats. The army has been accused of aiding terrorists in the ongoing protests after the government seized power in 2021. In January this year, senior democracy defender and leader Koh Jimmy (53) and National League parliamentarian Pio Sayar Thaw (41) were sentenced to death. Along with them, two men, Hla Myo Ong and Ang Tura Saw, who were arrested for throwing explosives at the army, were sentenced to death.
UN human rights representative Tom Andrew accused the death penalty as unfit for democratic countries and an inhuman act.
