Mozambique Prison Riot; 33 people were killed, 6,000 of the rioters escaped from prison

Maputo: On Christmas Day, 33 people were killed in a prison riot in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. 15 people were injured. 6,000 of the rioters escaped from prison. But Bernardino Rafael, the general commander of the police in Mozambique, said that 150 of the survivors had been found. Jailbreak attempts were made by inmates from two other jails. The details of the dead and injured are not clear.General Commander Bernardino Raffaele said that protests outside the prison regarding the October election results led to the riot. Law Minister Helena Kida opposed this. There was civil unrest in Mozambique over the elections.The victory of Frelimo, Mozambique’s long-ruling party, was upheld by the Supreme Court on Monday, prompting nationwide protests by opposition parties who claimed the vote had been rigged. At least 21 people have been killed in the riots that broke out in the country after the Supreme Court’s decision, Mozambique’s interior minister said.
