Washington: One case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the US following reports of monkeypox cases in South America and Europe. The monkeypox was confirmed in a Massachusetts native who returned from a visit to Canada.
About 40 people were diagnosed with the disease in Spain and Portugal. The first case was reported in the UK on May 6. Nine cases have been confirmed in the UK so far. The spread of the rare and dangerous monkeypox, which was reported only in parts of Africa, is causing concern in other parts of the world.
If the monkey fever is caused by a virus, the patient will recover in a few weeks. However, death is rare. In recent years, thousands of people in central and western Africa have been infected with the H5N1 virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday it had consulted with health experts in the UK and Europe over the spread of monkeypox. The group said further action could be taken only after a clear study of the spread of monkeypox in countries such as Africa and its effects.
The virus was first confirmed in Britain by a man returning from Nigeria. The UK Health Security Agency said in a statement that the cases, which were later reported, may have been social spreading. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that the majority of cases are caused by male homosexuals.
The UK Health Security Agency says that although monkeypox is more likely to be transmitted through sexual contact, monkeypox is not the only contagious disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus can be transmitted through body fluids, sores caused by monkeypox, sharing clothing and bedding, and using home-based disinfectants.
The primary symptoms of monkeypox are fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and inflammation of the lymph nodes. Later, blisters appear on the face and body, similar to those in chickenpox. The disease was first confirmed in monkeys in 1958. The first human case of the disease was reported in 1970. The disease is transmitted from infected animals to humans.
