Brazilia: At least 36 people have been killed in landslides following heavy rains in southeastern Brazil. Hundreds of people were displaced. The catastrophic rains and floods hit the town of São Sebastião and its surrounding areas. Footage of the town being submerged in water has been released by the national media and social media.
Houses in hillsides washed away by mud and debris, flooded highways, and cars destroyed by fallen trees illustrate the extent of the disaster in the city of São Sebastião.
The city received record rainfall. It is reported that 600 mm of rain fell here in twenty four hours. Official information is that 35 people were killed in the city of Sao Sebastiao alone. There are also reports that a seven-year-old girl was killed in the neighboring city of Ubatuba.
Sao Sebastiao, 200 km north of Sao Paulo, is also a town where people from the capital city come to spend the weekend ahead of Lent, the Christian religious festival.
