BRUSSELS: The European Union has decided to introduce a landmark law restricting the use of artificial intelligence. After 38 hours of discussions, EU representatives and policy-making leaders reached an agreement to proceed with the AI Act. This is the first time that legislation has been enacted to regulate artificial intelligence. European Union President Ursula von Leyer said that this will be the legal framework to develop AI in a way that humanity can trust.
The law includes guidelines for governments to use AI for biometric surveillance systems. AI-powered multi-tasking assistant ChatGPIT will also have control over it. The law requires that ChatGPT and other public AI systems meet transparency standards before they are brought to market. It is also required to comply with EU copyright laws and hand over a detailed description of the content used to train the AI. Governments should only use real-time biometric surveillance in relation to more serious crimes such as terrorism.
A redressal mechanism for grievances related to AI has been prescribed in the Act. Companies who violate the terms will have to pay fines ranging from 75 lakh euros to 3.5 crore euros.
