Alappuzha: The death of ducks in Haripad municipality in the district has been confirmed due to bird flu. Following this, an emergency meeting chaired by District Collector VR Krishna Teja decided to intensify preventive measures in these areas.
The presence of H5N1 virus was detected in the samples tested at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal. The samples were collected from Vashuthanam West and Vashuthanam North paddocks in Ward IX of Haripad Municipality.
The process of killing and bullying the ducks and other birds in the area within one kilometer radius of the confirmed places of the disease will be started as soon as the government instructions are received. For this, eight R.R.T. (Rapid Response Team) have also been set up. The authorities of Haripad Municipality and Pallipad Gram Panchayat have been instructed to provide necessary facilities for culling. 20,471 birds will have to be killed.
In Haripad Municipality, importation and transportation of birds within one kilometer radius of the bird flu confirmed area is prohibited. Police and revenue department officials have been assigned to monitor this properly. The Collector instructed the Health Department to strengthen precautionary measures to prevent bird flu from spreading to humans.
