Abu Dhabi: Prominent businessman Atlas Ramachandran passed away in Dubai. He died due to a heart attack. He was being treated in the hospital due to old age ailments.
Relatives said that the last rites will be held in Dubai this evening. Atlas Ramachandran is a personality who was very dear to Malayalis. Atlas Ramachandran passed away last night at Dubai Aster Mankhul Hospital. He was undergoing treatment here for the past few days.
His wife Indira Ramachandran and daughter Dr. Manju Ramachandran were with him at the hospital. For a long time, he was suffering from old age ailments.
He was born on July 31, 1942 in Thrissur to V Kamalakara Menon and MM Rugmini Amma.
Ramachandran, the founder of Atlas Jewellery, has produced and acted in many films. He was also active in the film industry as a director and distributor. He was the Chairman of Atlas Group of Jewellery.
Atlas Jewelry once became a favorite institution of Malayalis due to Ramachandran’s tireless efforts. In 2015, he was detained by the Dubai Police in connection with irregularities in financial transactions. The case was based on the default of loans taken from 23 banks including Bank of Baroda.
Atlas Ramachandran, who was later in jail, was released from jail in 2018. As the case was not over, he was unable to leave the UAE. Atlas Ramachandran acted in 13 films and directed one film.
The death occurred while efforts were being made to reopen Atlas Jewellery. He was the first chairman of the Gold Promotion Committee of the Dubai Shopping Festival. He was the editor of the film magazine ‘Chalachitra’. He also served as the Vice President of the Malayalam Film Producers Association.
