Tehran: Following Sri Lanka, Iran is also reportedly heading for a severe financial crisis. People in Iran have taken to the streets as prices of essential commodities have quadrupled. Four people have been killed in clashes between police and protesters in Iran, according to international media reports.
But scenes of protests in major cities are flooding social media. There are also reports of several business institutions being looted.
In Iran, an Asian country of more than 80 million people, the situation has been exacerbated by the sudden cessation of government subsidies for essential commodities. The price of cooking oil, milk, and cereals has quadrupled in one go. It is clear from the footage that people are chanting slogans against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Ibrahim Reiz.
According to the international media, large protests are taking place in all 31 provinces of Iran. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested. The Internet has been cut off in ten major cities. Earlier, in 2019, a popular uprising erupted in Iran.
