Male: Former Maldives President Abdullah Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the court. He was convicted of corruption and money laundering. In addition to the prison sentence, a fine of 5 million US dollars has also been imposed, according to various media reports citing the Maldivian daily Awas.
The Maldives Criminal Court found the charges against Abdullah Yameen to be valid and Yameen was found guilty and the Chief Judge Ahmad Shakeel sentenced him. The case was that Yameen misused his position as president and took one million dollars from a private company for resort development. It is alleged that Yameen took this money from former Maldives MP Yusuf Naeem.
Yusuf Naeem was also tried along with Yameen in the case. The court has also found Naeem guilty in the bribery case. Chief Judge Ahmad Shakeel said that it is suspicious that the money shown in the documents was transferred from Yusuf Naeem’s account to Yameen’s account.
Meanwhile, the trial of the case started in the criminal court on January 2 this year. According to Awas’s report, the trial proceedings ended on November 30. The prosecution argued that Yameen should be given the maximum sentence because he was the president of the country at the time of the crime.
