Rom: 59 dead, 40 rescued after a boat carrying refugees capsizes off Calabria, Italy. The search is on to find out if more people were involved in the accident.
It is reported that around 150 people were in the boat. The dead included children and women. The bodies of 27 people were found washed up on the shore.
People from Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan were on the boat. The accident happened when there was a short distance to land. The cause of the accident was bad weather and the boat hit a rock.
At the same time, Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said that the illegal delivery of refugees will be strictly prevented. Refugees arrive in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea in Italy. This is a very dangerous waterway. 20,333 people trying to cross this route to Europe have been killed or disappeared since 2014 alone.
