Kolkata: In West Bengal, villagers blocked the national highway and set fire to vehicles following the gang-rape and murder of a schoolgirl. Villagers set fire to vehicles blocking traffic on NH-31, which connects the capital Kolkata with Siliguri.
The protest took place in Chopra, 500 km north of Kolkata. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. They used lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse protesters.
The protest broke out afternoon in front of a police station. It lasted for hours. Three buses and police vehicles were set on fire. Police believe the villagers dispersed around 5 p.m., but they moved to another location and attacked police with bows and arrows.The girl, who passed the Class X examination this year, was the victim of atrocities. The girl went missing last night. The girl’s body was found under a tree at the end of the search. Two bicycles and a mobile phone were found here. Villagers say the child was gang-raped and killed.
