Chennai: Actor Rajinikanth support Citizenship Amendment Act. Rajinikanth responded that the protests against the citizenship law were politically motivated: “Students should not be an instrument of religious leaders and politicians. The national citizenship register is essential to the country. The response came after senior leaders of the party invited Rajinikanth to the BJP.
The Income Tax Department had terminated tax evasion cases against Rajinikanth following the direction of the Central Direct Tax Board. The Income Tax Department was behind the move by BJP leaders to invite Rajinikanth to the NDA. Since 2002, the Income Tax department has ended tax evasion cases. The action was taken following the direction of the Central Direct Tax Board, which did not want action in cases of less than Rs 1 crore.
Rajinikanth had reported earnings of Rs 61.12 lakh in 2002, Rs 1.75 crore in 2003 and Rs 33.93 lakh in 2004. Following the raid on his residence at Poise Gardens, he was fined more than Rs 67 lakh. The Income Tax Department had filed an appeal in the Madras High Court challenging the trial court’s order. This appeal was withdrawn by the Income Tax Department. This was followed by a decision to suspend the tax evasion cases imposed in 2007 and 2012.
