Thiruvananthapuram: The health department has closed and sealed 2 scanning centers in Alappuzha in the case of non-detection of defects in the unborn child. The health department officials locked and sealed everything including the scanning machines.
According to law, records of scanning are to be kept for 2 years. But on investigation it was found that no records were kept by any institution. The license of both the establishments was cancelled.
According to the instructions of the Minister of Health Veena George, it was found that the records and other things were not kept during the inspections conducted by the expert team of the Health Department. Further investigation is going on. There will be further action after the report is submitted.
Alappuzha South Police had registered a case against Dr. Shirley and Dr. Pushpa, gynecologists of Alappuzha Kadapuram Children’s and Women’s Hospital and two doctors from a private lab, in the case of a newborn baby with severe disability. The complaint is that the doctors did not recognize the defect despite several scans during the pregnancy. The child’s family had lodged a complaint with the Chief Minister and the Health Minister. But the initial conclusion of the police is that the doctors who treated her did not make a mistake and there was a mistake in the lab test. A medical board comprising experts from the health department has been constituted to investigate the malpractice.
