Thiruvananthapuram: The spread of covid in Kerala is expected to intensify by mid-May. The government is considering a one-week shutdown. Covid has killed 248 people in the state in five days. TPR was above 25 in eight districts. According to a team of experts at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, the number of patients will remain high for another two weeks.
Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts. The team of experts estimates that the number of patients in need of inpatient treatment in Thiruvananthapuram could reach 4000 per day. There is also a proposal to increase the number of ICU beds accordingly. The rate of confirmed cases in the state is 10.31. The national average is only 6.92. In Malappuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode districts, out of 100 people tested, about 30 are diagnosed with the disease. The situation is critical in Thrissur, Alappuzha, and Kottayam districts.
It is at this point that the government is considering a week-long total shutdown. The Department of Health has also recommended a lockdown. It is learned that the decision will be taken on Monday after looking at the effect of the strict restrictions till Sunday.
