Kochi: The High Court quashed the state government’s order banning plastic carry bags below 60 gsm.
The court ruled that the state government has no power to ban.
A bench of Justice N Nagaresh passed the verdict. The court also pointed out that under the Plastic Waste Act, the central government has the power to impose a ban. The court order came in a petition challenging the state government’s move to ban plastic carry bags.
The state government passed the ban order intending to make Kerala a nature-friendly state. A ban was imposed on plastic bags below the specified limit, considering that such plastic covers do not decompose on the ground.
