Thiruvananthapuram: The southwest monsoon is expected to intensify in Kerala by mid-July. The monsoon is expected to return to the state by July 8 and heavy rains are expected from mid-July.
Isolated showers are expected in some parts of the state ahead of the resumption of the southwest monsoon, Meteorological Department officials said.
In June, the state received the lowest rainfall in 39 years. 408.44 mm. This is 36 percent less than the usual 643mm. However, June 2013 was the wettest year. 1042.7 mm.
Almost all the districts received light rainfall this year. The lowest was in Thiruvananthapuram (55 percent) and Palakkad (50 percent).
According to the Meteorological Department, the 34 percent drop in monsoon rains in Kerala in June has raised concerns among farmers and affected the inflow of water to reservoirs.
