Kochi: The Motor Vehicle Department has prepared strict measures to ensure safety of children in cars and two-wheelers. Special seat belts are mandatory for children between one and four years of age. Helmets will also be made mandatory for children above four years of age on two-wheelers. The action was taken after the baby in the mother’s lap died of suffocation after the airbag hit his face in a collision between a car and a tanker lorry.
Children between the ages of four to 14 and below 135 cm in height are required to wear a child booster cushion with a seat belt. It is also a good idea to use a safety belt that keeps children attached to their parents. This suggestion is due to the situation where children sleep while traveling with their parents. The motor vehicle department also informs that if there is any kind of accident to the children, the driver will be fully responsible.
As part of this, in the first phase, awareness will be done through social media this month. The department plans to enforce the law with fines from December after issuing a warning in November.
