New Delhi: The Supreme Court stayed the death sentence of Amirul Islam, a native of Assam, in the Perumbavoor case of raping and killing a law student. The court has also asked to produce the psychological and prison character certificate of the accused. If it is possible to mitigate the punishment, a study should be done and a report should be submitted. The verdict was delivered by a bench headed by Justice BR Gavai.
The court also directed that a team be formed in Thrissur Medical College for psychological examination.
The High Court sentenced the accused to death sentence after finding that the crime was extremely rare. A law student was killed in Perumbavoor on April 28, 2016.
