Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Malayalam lyricist Bichu Thirumala (80) has passed away.
He died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram at 3.45 am today. Bichu Thirumala has been an active presence in the Malayalam film industry for over six decades. Hundreds of the best Malayalam songs of all time have been penned by him. He has written over 400 film songs and has written over 5,000 songs, including simple songs and film songs. He has won two state awards.
He is also the recipient of the Sukumar Azhikode Tatvamasi Award, the Kerala Film Critics Association’s Chalachithraratnam Award and the Swathipi Bhaskaran Ganasahitya Award.
Bichu Thirumala alias B. Sivasankaran Nair was born on February 13, 1942 in Cherthala Ayyanattu House, the eldest son of CG Bhaskaran Nair and Parukutty. Bichu is the nickname given to him by his grandfather, scholar Gopal Pillai, who was also a well-known scholar. After moving to Thirumala, Thiruvananthapuram, he became Bichu Thirumala.Singer Sushila Devi, Vijayakumar, Dr. Chandra, Syama and Darshan Raman are brothers.
