Thiruvananthapuram: There are indications that liquor prices will come down in the state. Excise Minister TP Ramakrishnan said that the reduction of liquor prices is under consideration. The intention is to reduce prices by considering the tax deduction proposal. The increase in the price of alcohol is due to the increase in the price of raw materials. That is why liquor taxes are higher than in other states. The minister also said that price control could be checked by reducing taxes.
The decision was taken yesterday on the increase in liquor prices in the state. Suppliers who currently have contracts with Bevco have been allowed a 7 percent increase in base prices this year. Beer and wine are not expensive. Distribution companies have demanded that the price of alcohol be increased in view of the increase in the price of extra neutral alcohol or spirit, the raw material for the production of alcohol. Last year, the companies submitted new tenders but the decision was postponed in view of Covid. The revised liquor price will come into effect on February 1.
