Kochi: The high court sought an explanation from the Election Commission on the issue of double voting. The court sought an explanation from the commission while considering a petition filed by Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala seeking freezing of the double vote. It is suggested that an explanation be given by Monday. The High Court will reconsider the petition on Monday. The petition will be heard by Justice CT Ravikumar as the Chief Justice is on leave.
The Leader of the Opposition had approached the High Court alleging that he had lodged five complaints with the Election Commission alleging irregularities in the voter list and no action had been taken. The petition seeks an interim injunction to deny the right to vote in the Assembly elections to voters with double votes. The petition states that despite the complaint, the commission replied that there were technical hurdles in removing the dual vote.
Advocate T Asifali today moved the High Court seeking immediate consideration of the Leader of the Opposition’s petition. The petition was asked to be considered in the absence of the Chief Justice on the ground that it was urgent.
