Health Department Minister Veena George said that the Health Department has prepared a protocol for mental health support for DNA sampling. Samples of unidentifiable corpses and those with only body parts were taken for DNA testing. When someone comes looking for their missing loved ones, taking their samples and doing a DNA test can identify who died. For that purpose, the criteria have been prepared to mentally prepare the living people, especially the victims of the disaster, while taking their samples for DNA testing.
These criteria aim to prepare those who are experiencing the severity of the disaster and worry about their loved ones mentally, and to stand with their hearts and understand very gently what testing is and what its importance is. DNA testing is a 100 percent reliable process. Only close blood relatives such as children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, father’s siblings, mother’s siblings and first cousins are taken for DNA testing.
The protocol is designed to ensure the basic principles of emergency counseling such as observing, listening and providing assistance. Empathetic approach and relief for physical and mental difficulties should be ensured including their pain. Don’t force them to talk more or share information. But they also need to create a calm and safe environment for them to talk.
