Thiruvananthapuram: The Child Rights Commission has issued an order banning night classes in private tuition centers and parallel colleges in the state. A ban has also been imposed on the excursions organized by them. The Child Rights Commission’s action is based on a petition filed by a teacher, Sam John.
Private tuition centers and parallel colleges organize night study classes with and without SSLC Higher Secondary Public Examinations. The ban is on the grounds that it poses a challenge to the physical and mental health of children. It also creates more stress for the parents. Therefore, the order of the Child Rights Commission that night classes are completely banned, these night study classes, which extend for several hours after the study hours of the school, is unscientific.
Also study tours to parallel colleges and private tuition centers have been stopped. According to the order, the government has issued specific guidelines for study tours, but tuition centers and parallel colleges are not following them and forcing children and their parents to go on the tour.
The Child Rights Commission has directed the Secretary of Public Education Department, Secretary of Local Self-Government Department, DGP, Transport Commission, to take further steps. The Secretaries shall take action on the recommendation of the Commission and inform the Commission in writing within 60 days.
