A tribal couple was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Aralam farm in Kannur. The deceased were identified as Velli and his wife Leela of Block 13.
The incident took place this evening. The elephant attacked them while they were collecting cashew nuts in their own field. Both were killed on the spot. Efforts have been started to shift the bodies to the taluk hospital.
Peravoor MLA Sunny Joseph said that it was a painful incident. He alleged that administrative permission was obtained to build an elephant wall using Scheduled Tribe funds in 2020 and that it could not be implemented as part of the slow-motion policy. He said that this is a situation where human lives are at stake. He also accused the forest department of not being active enough in the area.
