New Delhi: The Uttarakhand Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill. Once signed by the governor, the single civil code will become law in the state. With this, Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to pass the Uniform Civil Code.
‘Hopefully, the law will help end the neglect of women. Equality in marriage, divorce and property rights will be ensured. Today is an important day for Uttarakhand. We have passed a bill that the people of the country have been demanding for a long time and Uttarakhand is the first state to pass the bill. I would like to thank all the MLAs and the people of Uttarakhand for giving us the opportunity to come to power and pass the bill,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told reporters.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced the bill in a special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly that began on Monday. On Sunday, the Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the draft of the Uniform Civil Code forwarded by the five-member committee. At the same time, the Chief Minister denied the allegation that the opposition was not informed in passing the bill. Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Congress leaders were properly informed and a letter was given. Uniform civil code may be introduced in other BJP-ruled states as well.
