New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has said that it will consider the proposal to integrate medical and engineering entrance exams like NEET and JEE with National Undergraduate Common Entrance Test (CUET-UG).
Apart from JEE and NEET, the three main undergraduate public entrance exams in the country are CUET-UG, which has been conducted since this year. About 43 lakh students appear for these exams. Most of them take at least two entrance exams. The JEE Main exam consists of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects. Biology instead of Maths in NEET-UG. 61 subjects including those included in JEE and NEET syllabus are part of CUTE. Students write all these entrance exams based on their knowledge of the same subjects. If this is implemented, students will have to write only one exam instead of three entrance exams in four subjects namely Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. Therefore, a proposal has been received to integrate JEE and NEET with CUET-UG and UGC Chairman M. Jagdish Kumar said.
A rank list of students who want to go for engineering can be prepared based on the marks in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Marks of Biology can be considered instead of Maths in Medicine. Those who have not opted for medicine or engineering will get the opportunity to join various courses based on the marks obtained in subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, etc. in the CUET exam. Therefore, by writing only one exam in these four subjects, students will have plenty of opportunities to apply for courses in the subjects of interest. Jagadish Kumar said that the students will not be under the pressure of appearing for multiple exams. He informed that a final decision on this matter will be taken after discussion with various departments.
