Lucknow: At least 18 people were killed when a truck rammed into a group of workers lying on the roadside. The incident took place in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh.
The dead were lying in front of a parked bus. The truck, which was speeding on this road in the morning, was going over them.
The deceased were identified as Bihar natives. The bus was returning from Haryana when it crashed on the highway at night. They then lay down on the side of the road in front of the stopped bus.
The truck first hit the back of the bus. The bus and truck then went over to the workers. The injured have been admitted to the hospital, police said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief at the loss of lives in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. Modi also announced a compensation of 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased. The injured would be given 50,000 each.
