New Delhi, December 8, 2023 – Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra was expelled from Lok Sabha on Tuesday on charges of accepting bribes to raise questions in Parliament. The decision was taken after the Ethics Committee recommended the same.
The motion was passed by voice vote, with the opposition boycotting the voting. Lok Sabha adjourned for the day till Monday.
The report states that the charges against Moitra are “extremely offensive and heinous”. Moitra was accused of accepting a bribe from businessman Darshan Hiranandaniya to raise questions in Parliament.
Moitra has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated”. She has said that she will challenge the decision in court.
Moitra’s expulsion is a major blow to the Trinamool Congress. She was a rising star in the party and was seen as a potential successor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The expulsion is also a setback for the opposition, which has been trying to corner the government on corruption allegations.
