New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha has passed the controversial Criminal Procedure (Identification Amendment) Bill 2022. The law allows investigators to collect biometric information about offenders. The House passed the bill unanimously, rejecting the opposition’s demand that the bill be left to the selection committee. The bill was also passed in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
It is a law that allows police to collect biological information, including criminals’ fingerprints, footprints, photos, eyes, and DNA. Investigating officers can collect evidence about the offenders as per Sections 53 and 53A of the CRPC Act along with handwriting and signature without the permission of the court.
These can be stored for up to 75 years from the date of collection of biometric data. The central government claims that the new law will enable the police to include comprehensive information on criminals in their database and expedite investigations.
