New Delhi: The Central Government has criticized companies that manufacture and sell unsafe vehicles in the country. Giridhar Aramane, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways, expressed concern over the trend. The Hindustan Times also reported that he had asked automakers to end the practice.
He alleged that only a handful of car manufacturers in the country have been able to adapt the vehicle safety rating system, and that too only for their high-end models. He also expressed concern over reports that some automakers were deliberately reducing safety features on Indian models.
Aramane cited the example of the United States and India in road accidents.
In the US, 36,560 people were killed in 45 million road accidents in 2018. During the same period, 1.5 lakh Indians lost their lives in 4.5 lakh road accidents. He also reminded that vehicle safety systems have reduced the number of deaths on American roads.
