New Delhi: State governments are not allowed to start TV channels. The decision is made by the Broadcasting Ministry. The Center has clarified that states are not allowed to broadcast or distribute. It has also been directed to regularize the currently functioning channels under Prasar Bharti. The Ministry also directed that the process be completed before December 31, 2023.
The Ministry of Broadcasting and Distribution issued an order in this regard on Friday. The ministry said the directive was issued taking into account the recommendation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Supreme Court judgment in the Cricket Association of Bengal case and the legal advice of the Law Ministry.
According to reports, the proposal may directly affect IPTV controlled by the Andhra Pradesh government, Kalvi TV, Arasu Cable, etc. by the Tamil Nadu government. The proposal is also likely to create major political ramifications. The ministry also stated that certain concessions will be given to continue broadcasting of television channels for educational purposes.
