Bengaluru: Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari wants a system to sound an alarm if the rear seat passengers are not wearing seat belts. Gadkari said that steps are in progress and the rules will be released soon.
Even though seat belts are mandatory for rear seat passengers, many people do not follow it. Newer cars have a system that sounds an alarm if the seat belt is not worn. Gadkari said that it is under consideration to make such a system mandatory in the back seat as well.
After the death of former Tata Group CEO Cyrus Mistry in a car accident, the seat belt debate has been revived in the country. The police informed that Mistry, who was traveling in the back seat, was not wearing a seat belt.
Gadkari said the government is planning to launch a nationwide campaign on wearing seat belts. Gadkari also informed that Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar have informed that they will collaborate with this for free.
