Puducherry: With the loss of the majority in the confidence vote, the V.Narayanaswamy-led Congress government lost power in Puducherry. In the 33-member assembly, the ruling party’s strength was reduced to 12 members. With this, the government lost its majority, the speaker said. The opposition currently has 14 members in the House. The total membership of the Assembly has been reduced to 26. Two of the five Congress MLAs who resigned in January are ministers. One of them later joined the BJP.
The crisis in the government began last January with the resignation of six MLAs from the Congress-led coalition government. A DMK MLA later resigned. With this, the membership of the Congress was reduced to 9 and the membership of the Government to 12.
