Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. Om Birla was elected as Speaker by voice vote. During the second Modi government too, Om Birla was the speaker. Kodikunnil Suresh had contested in as a candidate of India Front. Om Birla was escorted to Speaker Diaz by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
There were 13 resolutions proposing Om Birla’s name for the post of Speaker. Kodikunnil Suresh’s name in and three resolutions. Narendra Modi proposed the name of Om Birla first.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh supported it. This resolution was put to voice vote as the first motion submitted. With Om Birla winning, the opposition did not demand ballot or electronic voting. Since the first resolution was passed, the other resolutions were not considered for voting.
