New Delhi: The collegium chaired by Chief Justice N V Ramana recommended the central government to appoint nine judges to Supreme Court including Justice C T Ravikumar from Kerala high court. This includes Nagaratna (Karnataka), Justice Hima Kohli (Telangana), and Justice Bela Trivedi (Gujarat). The other members are Justice A.S. Okha (Karnataka Chief Justice), Justice Vikram Nath (Gujarat Chief Justice), Justice J.K. Maheshwari (Sikkim Chief Justice), Justice MM. Sundaresh (Chennai), P.S. Narasimha (former Additional Solicitor General). Their names have been published on the Supreme Court website.
If the recommendation is accepted by the government, Justice B.V. Nagaratna will become the first woman Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by 2027. Justice Nagaratna is the daughter of former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court ES Venkataramaiah. This is the first time the collegium has recommended three women to the Supreme Court at the same time.
Currently, AS Okha is the most senior judge in the High Court. Justice Okha was known in the country for questioning the government in handling the covid epidemic and for issuing numerous judgments on the rights of interstate workers during the epidemic.
In addition to Chief Justice Ramana, other members of the collegium are Justices U.U. Lalith, A.M. Khanwilker, DY. Chandrachud, L.Nageshwara Rao.
