Patna: The number of child death from brain fever in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district has reached 150. Most of the patients are being treated at Kejriwal Hospital and Krishna Medical College.
At the same time, the allegations that the cause of death is poisoning of lichi fruit are being investigated. The Bihar government has announced that more doctors will be appointed in the affected areas.
The Supreme Court is likely to hear the petition seeking immediate intervention in the treatment of children with brain fever on June 24. A vacation bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant decided to hear the plea in the public interest plea filed by lawyers Manohar Pratap and Sanpreet Singh Ajmavi.
The petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking the formation of a special team of health experts to provide expert treatment to children. The petition also calls for the Bihar government to issue an urgent order to set up a 500-bed special intensive care unit and provide free medical treatment, considering the special situation.
The state government has failed to take adequate measures to prevent and treat the disease. The petition also sought to provide compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
