Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh has resigned. He met Governor Ajay Bhalla in person and handed over his resignation. The resignation was submitted after holding discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Communal violence has been raging in Manipur for more than a year.
There were allegations that the government had failed to handle the violence that broke out between the Kuki and Meite communities. The resignation comes as the Congress is preparing to move a no-confidence motion in the budget session on Monday. The BJP national leadership has accepted Biren Singh’s resignation, anticipating the possibility of BJP MLAs who were unhappy with Singh’s leadership joining the Congress.
BJP state president A Sharda, North East Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra and 19 MLAs accompanied the Chief Minister to the Raj Bhavan. The resignation comes after Biren Singh announced the other day that the governme nt would accept all efforts to ensure that the people of the state live in peace and harmony as before. He will be grateful for all the interventions, development works and various schemes undertaken by the central government to protect the interests of everyone in Manipur. Singh also wrote in his resignation letter that it was an honor to have served Manipur for so long.
So far, 250 people have been killed in the riots that began in May 2023.
