33 ministers were sworn in in the first phase of the Mahayuti government’s cabinet expansion in Maharashtra. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will retain the Home Ministry. The BJP has taken the lion’s share of the state’s ministerial list. The first phase of cabinet expansion took place in Nagpur today after the Mahayuti’s big victory in Maharashtra and the power struggle between the alliance parties. The Mahayuti alliance witnessed a decisive victory in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections. It secured a huge victory by winning 230 out of 288 seats in the state.
While the BJP won 132 seats, the Shiv Sena got 57 seats and the NCP got 41 seats. Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the Chief Minister on December 5. Former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and NCP’s Ajit Pawar became the Deputy Chief Ministers.
With the swearing-in, it is expected that the power-sharing arrangements between the grand alliance will soon be finalised. It has been decided that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will retain the Home Ministry, which was a major point of contention between the BJP and its ally Shiv Sena. A total of 39 MLAs, including state Bharatiya Janata Party president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, have been inducted into the Maharashtra government.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in Nagpur, a day before the week-long winter session of the state assembly begins on December 16. 33 people were sworn in as cabinet ministers and 6 as ministers of state. Of the 33 cabinet ministers, 16 are from the BJP, 9 from the Shiv Sena and 8 from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). With this, the BJP has the lion’s share of the state’s ministerial list.
