Former IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu have taken charge as the new election commissioners. The Election Commission is ready to announce the date of the election after the commissioners have taken charge. Ganesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were selected as the new commissioners by the committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Rajnan Chaudhary.
Kerala cadre IAS officer Gyanesh Kumar and Uttarakhand cadre IS officer Sukhbir Singh Sandhu took over as election commissioners today. The new role given to the ex-IS officers is also in return for overseeing the implementation of RSS agendas including Uniform Civil Code during the Ayodhya case and the cancellation of Kashmir’s special status. New election commissioners were appointed in haste while the court was hearing a petition against the central government’s move to remove the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from the election commissioner’s selection committee.
The new appointments vindicate the opposition’s allegation that the central government’s move is to push back the BJP’s nominees. At the same time, it is indicated that the Lok Sabha election date may be announced soon after the new election commissioners have taken charge. The Election Commission said that it is fully prepared for the polling. It is reported that the election will be held in seven phases. The commission members had completed their tour of all the states to assess the election preparations.
