New Delhi: Dates for the by-elections to the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency and five other assembly constituencies, which fell vacant following the death of Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, have been announced. The Central Election Commission has informed that the voting will be held on December 5. Bye-elections are being held for five assembly constituencies in different states.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was undergoing treatment for a long time, passed away on October 10. The by-election to the Rampur assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh is being held following the disqualification of SP leader Muhammad Azam Khan. In 2019, Azam Khan, who was sentenced to three years in prison for hate speech, was disqualified by the Speaker.
The by-election to the Sardarsahar assembly constituency in Rajasthan is being held following the death of Congress MLA Bhanwarlal Sharma. Padampur in Odisha, Kurhani in Bihar and Bhanupratapur in Chhattisgarh are the other Assembly seats that will be holding by-elections. The results of the by-elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be announced on the same day as the counting of votes.
